Youth Safety Event–Thurs. Nov 19 5:30-7:45 PM

Calling all parents!

White Bear Lake Area Schools and the White Bear Lake Police Department will host a District-Wide Safety Information Night from 6-8:15 p.m. on November 19, 2013 at WBLAHS – South Campus. A free dinner will be served from 5:30-6 p.m. that evening to attendees, and free childcare will be available for those attendees who need it.

During this event, parents will be able to attend two breakout sessions on the following topics: Internet Safety, Teen Driving Laws and Safety, Youth Drug Trends and Awareness, Healthy Relationships and Safe Dating. The evening was scheduled in such a way that a family who sends two adult participants can cover all four topics, which were selected based upon topics that are most requested by parents, and especially parents of preteens and teens.

Find a “Cop’s Corner” article about the event in the Nov. 5 issue of the White Bear Press or available online here.

Join the 2015 Frassati First Lego League Robotics Competition Team!
Sign Up Now for next year’s Fall Team!

WHAT IS IT?

FIRST Lego League (FLL) introduces students in grades 4-8, to the fun and excitement of science and technology. FLL challenges kids to think like scientists and engineers. Alongside adult coaches, FLL teams solve problems using engineering concepts, presentation techniques and robots.

Students get to:

1.       Design, build, test and program robots using Lego Mindstorms Technology

2.       Apply real-world math and science concepts

3.       Research and develop a presentation that offers a solution to a problem that the team has identified. The 2015 season presentation will be about trash and recycling

4.       Learn critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills

5.       Participate in a tournament

Important: Lego League IS NOT about free-build playing with Lego bricks. Teams solve real-world problems using engineering concepts, presentation techniques and robots.

HOW DO I SIGN UP?

Frassati is currently lucky to have enough coaches for three teams. Contact Kathryn Whelan for more information about becoming a coach!

Team commitment is from late August through the competition dates, usually late November to early December. There is a possibility of advancement which would extend the commitment further.

Team coaches will set their own schedule but be expected to meet 1 to 3 times per week for at least an hour. Before and after school times as well as weekends are acceptable. There will be a maximum of 6 students per team.

A fee of around $75-$100 will be used to offset the cost of registering to participate and compete with other FLL teams. A final fee will be determined based on participation. Contact Kathryn Whelan with questions.

To sign up, please complete the attached form and return to Peggy Kemp, Frassati School Office, no later than Friday, May 29, 2015.
