Mission Trip to Haiti! – Baby Items Needed for Hospital!

Consider helping Healing Haiti and Reiser Relief for your Marathon Act of Service!

Fr. Talbot and a team of missionaries are traveling to Haiti from October 20-27, 2014 with the groups Healing Haiti and Reiser Relief. Both of these groups have connections to St. Mary of the Lake. Our parishioner, Mary Welle, is one of the leaders of Healing Haiti and has traveled there many times. Healing Haiti was founded by local White Bear Lake resident Jeffrey Gacek; Reiser Relief is named after Fr. Bernie Reiser, the former assistant pastor at St. Mary of the Lake, who did so much good for the people of Haiti.

We will be visiting orphanages, eldercare, hospitals and schools.

The following items are needed for our trip:

  • baby bottles
  • small baby blankets
  • baby formula (any kind, any size)
  • baby t-shirts
  • baby lotion and wash (small bottles)
  • baby washcloths
  • disposable diapers
  • Black boys’ socks in various sizes (the kind that fold over at the ankle)

We will also be collecting socks for school kids. We will be buying the girls socks because we are sewing lace on them and need to get started on that project. If you would like to help with sewing email [email protected]. We will need to collect boys black socks in various sizes for children between 4 and 14 years. The younger boys seem to be wearing the kind that fold over at the ankle and the older boys wear the short socks that barely come over the tops of their shoes.

Donations are due by: Oct. 10.

For questions about going to Haiti on a mission trip, contact:
Mary Kathleen Welle, Advocate for the Sick and Dying, Healing Haiti
[email protected] 651-426-2687 H 651-247-5044

For questions on donations, contact: Melissa Gacek
[email protected] 612-306-5405

You can bring these items to school and place in the giant red box by the office. We also need financial support to pay the fees for the extra luggage that will contain all of our items. It costs $40 for a second checked suitcase of up to 50 pounds. Checks should be made payable to St. Mary of the Lake with “Haiti Support” marked in the memo line. The children at Frassati Catholic Academy will be collecting these items as well. Please pray for the people of Haiti and those of us who will travel to be with them. Thanks for your support!!

Peace,
Fr. Talbot, Mary Welle, Melissa Gacek

What IS FIRST
® LEGO® League…
FIRST® LEGO® League in Minnesota (MN FLL®) is part of an international robotics program that includes more than 200,000 kids in 63 countries.

Teams collaborate to build and program an autonomous robot to score points on a thematic playing surface (the Robot Game) and create an innovative solution to a problem correlated to the yearly theme (the Project), all while guided by the FLL Core Values. These three elements; the Robot Game, the Project, and FLL Core Values make up what is called The Challenge.

The Challenge – What a team does…
Each year the details of the yearly Challenge are released in August. Teams typically meet twice a week to fulfill three criteria to be used in judging at regional events:

The Robot Game

Using a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® robot kit, teams design, build and program an autonomous robot to achieve specific missions inspired by the yearly Challenge. Teams compete in three 2.5 minute rounds and are evaluated on mechanical design, programming, design innovation & strategy.

The Project

In conjunction with the yarly theme, teams conduct research to solve a real-world problem, develop an innovative solution and present and share their work at the competition and within their communities. They are evaluated in research, innovative solution and presentation.

Core Values

The 8 Core Values are the cornerstones of the FLL program. Teams are evaluated on HOW they work together, as well as inspiration, teamwork and gracious professionalism.

This team-based, hands-on, competitive robotics program provides challenging and exciting learning opportunities for young people. It spurs innovation, develops teamwork and leadership skills and promotes excitement in science and technology.  Visit the FIRST website for more program details.
